Why doesn't my Windows XP computer detect any wireless networks? Before troubleshooting an issue with the computer, first rule out any issues with the wireless network itself by checking the following: Be sure that you are in the presence of a wireless network. Make sure that the wireless router is powered on and functioning properly. Make sure the wireless router’s SSID, or network name, has broadcast enabled. If the SSID broadcast is disabled, your computer will not be able to detect the network. If for security reasons you must have the SSID broadcast disabled, you will have to manually enter the name of the network during wireless set up. If any of the above is not the issue, verify that the wireless device in the computer itself is turned on. Note: On most notebooks, there will be a physical button or switch, an FN key combination or both to turn on the wireless device in the notebook. Please refer to the user guide that came with your notebook to see exactly how this is performed with your particular notebook. If the wireless network is still not detected, the driver for the wireless device in the computer may need to be removed and reinstalled. The device will be removed and go though a hardware detection process. During this detection process, the driver is reloaded automatically. The following steps will show you how to remove and reinstall you wireless device driver: Click Start and then Control Panel. In Control Panel, double- click on the System icon Note: If Control Panel is in Category View, under Control Panel, click Switch to Classic View. Yours may be different from the one shown. Click on Uninstall. In the Confirm Device Removal window, click on OK. Restart the computer. After the computer restarts, try to connect to a wireless network.
